Sand Winners are DESTROYING BEAUTIFUL GHANA!!

"Sand winners" are people or companies that take sand from the beach front, and sell it on. This is completely illegal in Ghana as it ruins the environment, the beaches and tourism. For many years, sand winners have been taking trucks loads of sand from the beach fronts near Elmina almost EVERY DAY in industrial volumes!

As over 1500 cubic metres of sand was being removed every day, the land has eroded, and the beach is almost non-existent. Hotel resorts which provide valuable employment to local people and help to build the tourism trade, benefiting Ghana, the pathways used by local people from villages like Ankwanda to walk with their market produce to Elmina, all are in serious jeopardy.

What was a beautiful natural asset for Ghana, has now become an environmental disgrace. Although the practice of sand winning is completely illegal all the local and regional institutions seemed unable or unwilling to control the situation; the law seemed to count for nothing, and every day the erosion become worse. After over 3 years of campaigning, we have finally succeeded in getting the attention of relevant Ministers and a National Security task force have blocked the paths used by the trucks to get to the beach fronts.

If you want to see the beautiful Ghana beaches protected, and if you want the Ghana law to act as it should, please sign this petition so that we use it to push the Ministers for Environment, Tourism, Trade, Housing and Mines to ensure beach front sand winning is stopped every where in Ghana. Please find the petition on the link below....

West Africa's wait for high-speed broadband is almost over!

A cable linking west Africa to Europe will not only make it less frustrating to use the internet but could help achieve millennium development goals on education, health and the environment. Speed and connectivity has been a severe frustration experienced by many in west Africa who have used the internet for anything heavier on bandwidth than browsing simple text-based websites. Connectivity in the region suffers from high latency, high cost and narrow bandwidth. But all this is set to change in December when the Africa Coast to Europe (ACE) broadband cable comes online.

The France Telecom-led $700m system will use high-speed fibre optic technology to link Europe with 18 countries along the west coast of Africa, as well as Mali and Niger. The submarine cable has an initial 1.92 terabits per second (Tb/s) capacity, which can be upgraded to 5.12Tb/s. To put this simply, 5.12Tb/s bandwidth would allow approximately 20m ordinary videos (and up to 5m HD videos) to be streamed simultaneously, without any significant buffering. Thanks to its ability to enable combined provision of voice, data and video at the same time, it is hoped that broadband will assist developing countries in areas such as education, health and governance. Broadband has also been linked to economic growth. A report from the World Bank claims that a 10% increase in broadband penetration in developing countries contributed 1.38% to economic growth over the study period,

There is still a long way to go before the potential of better connectivity can be fully realised in west Africa. Data indicates that internet-user penetration in sub-Saharan Africa was 10.6% in 2010, well behind the then global average of about 30%. Much work has to be done in terms of public policy and improving affordability and penetration among the most disadvantaged. However, once ACE is switched on the information age will have truly arrived in west Africa and it willl have the potential to deliver great changes to the region.

Video: New Beauty Pageant....MISS MATHEMATICS & their contestants! (Cote D'Ivoire)

There are only a few beauty titles the Miss West Africa ltd organisation will go out of it's way to applaud, especially those that are passionate about their goals. Recently Miss West Africa ltd extended support to Miss Buy Ghana as we believed it had a title that stood for something which was the promotion of buying Ghanaian products made in and by Ghanaians. But today, we witnessed the launch of a very interesting beauty pageant, the name of this pageant is Miss Mathématiques (french for Miss Mathematics).

This great pageant puts young and beautiful girls aspiring to be senior figures on the community in educational competition which will be based on their mathematical knowledge. "We need female mathematicians, engineers, girls learned. Let us change this country. We are here to provide you with the compliments of the Minister Kandia Camara makes it a point to schooling and success of girls in school, "said Raoul Kone, one of the initiators.

The Committee of the contest, led by Mr. Hilaire Atindehou, plans to decentralize in order to facilitate access to a larger number of candidates. We must remember that the mathematical contest'' Miss'' is designed to motivate and encourage girls to move increasingly towards science series to take place in the scientific and technological development of Côte d'Ivoire.

This competition is a core business of SMCI, next Olympics Pan-African Mathematics (OPAM), mathematical Abidjan Symposium, School of Mathematics and Mathematical Week Abidjan. You can trust the will of Africa to continue to use pageants for the benefits of society. Miss West Africa will be more than honoured to meet the finalists for the extravagant event.

Video: Rick Ross raps with Nigerian Artists P-Square - Beautiful Onyinye (Review)

So here is the new video by P-Square featuring Rick Ross. We were going to blog this earlier in the day, then watched the video and thought, no we won't, then later we decided maybe we would but with an editors perspective. The final decision was mix of the fact we do love to support anything that takes African culture further but then to what extent.

By this, the issue is, Do we need more videos of men in Yachts with women walking around with champagne bottles and foreign designer wear? This is not what gave P-Square their international status, in fact the artist that protray this, real of false, are hardly even selling records. It is so early 90s, boring and played out. With the exception of the good music playing, the video was not entycing. in some way it actually felt worst than seeing this from the constructed hip hop culture, because here you are listening to the natural afro beats whilst seeing something that is so foreign.

most of those abroad have seen this a million times, the question is would this grab their interest, or would it have grabbed their interest more if being introduced to something new. In most of these cases the artists have very little say in the directing of the videos and are mainly musicians as far as the art goes. We wish P-Square all the best but if not them, we hope other emerging African musicians do not go down the long winded path of bringing foreign culture home, when instead should be taking African culture abroad such as the likes of Angelique Kidjo and more. Enjoy the video below. Also more good news, they are now signed onto Akon's record label Konvict music, another West African whom we are also proud of. Overall, great song with beautiful content.

Cape Verde, Now The 10th Most Popular Destination for Buyers!

The expansion of Cape Verde's tourism industry is having a positive impact on its real estate sector.

According to Adam Cornwell, managing director of Feltrim International, there are numerous reasons why the island nation off the coast of west Africa appeals to holidaymakers, which is, in turn, boosting demand for places to stay.

Mr Cornwell described Cape Verde as a "credible winter sun alternative to the Canary Islands but far more affordable". He added the number of tourists arriving in the nation is expected to reach one million by 2015, which he commented is "fantastic news for emerging market property investors".

There are also opportunities to purchase completed Cape Verde real estate, rather than having to buy off-plan, which makes it a good choice for more cautious buyers, he stated.

Earlier this month, TheMoveChannel revealed enquiries for property in Cape Verde climbed in April, with the destination moving up by three places to become the tenth most popular destination among potential buyers.

And guess who else is from Cape Verde, VANNY, our International beauty queen.

Boko Haram Strikes Back! 11 Dead, Many More Injured!!!

Once again another church has been attacked, actually two churches. The mere fact of writing this article is even exhausting.

Gunmen, yesterday, attacked a church in Jos and Biu town in Borno State, killing five people and injuring several others. Also, this morning monday, a suicide bomber drove into the auditorium of Christ Chosen Church, along Rukuba Road in Jos North LGA, during worship hours, in a bomb-laden car which exploded, killing no fewer than 10 worshippers and over 60 critically injured. In Biu, gunmen invaded the EYN Church and opened fire on the worshippers. Many of the worshippers were said to have been killed while others received various degrees of injuries.

Apparantly, the Jama'atu Ahlis Sunnati Lidda'awati Wal Jihad also known as Boko Haram yesterday said its members were responsible for the suicide attack on a Church in Jos, Plateau State as well as the shooting of worshipers in another Church in Biu, Borno State.

Last week a nigerian lady from Mabushi, Abuja expressed her thoughts about Boko Haram to the Miss West Africa organisation via skype stating "Most of us don't believe all this that is going on, Boko Haram used to be a respectful group here. We believe what is going on is by foreign companies in order to interfere in Nigeria now that our economy is growing. How can an organisation claim it is fighting against the government for the people, yet spend half it's time killing the people. A lot of us here are muslims, we don't do this kind of stuff. It is not real at all. Even on the internet there is more information that this group is not real, because we have never seen these killers before!"

She continued further in the conversation "if you watch the news and someone translates what they say to you, you will see these guys are not even smart enough to put meaning to their objectives yet they are smart enough to out do the law and make bombs! Also let us not forget their attacks on the people only began when we were standing up against the removal of the oil subsidiary. Now with all the Boko Haram this issue has been swept under the carpet, making those who looked like enemies of the people, now look like heroes. Further more, the Court turns down Nigeria oil protest case in the Niger Delta!.....Who ever is doing this and getting these people to kill Nigerians, we are not fools if there is something going on these days then it is the people who want our oil and don't want to see us grow" (Quote copied and pasted exactly as in conversation, with a few spelling and gramma corrections)

Following her quote, The US Supreme Court on Monday 23rd April, declined to take up an appeal by 19 Nigerians seeking to invoke a US anti-torture law to sue oil giant Chevron over deaths in the Niger Delta. A spilling by Shell that ended up taking the lives of many Nigerians. This was after the Nigerian government release stories that the head figures of Boko Haram had been killed.

On behalf of this blog we can not confirm how true her statements are but it is definitely something to think about. It is a very sad incidence and may the dead victims rest in peace, most importantly we wish the best upon their families.

Nigerian Footballer Kidnapped, 150,000 euros Ransom for Christian Obodo

Family of Italian team Christian Obodo confirmed he was kidnapped today in Warri, southern Nigeria by unknown gunmen on his way to visit a friend.

Obodo was for several years a Nigeria international. Last season, he played on loan at Lecce from Serie A side Udinese. Lecce were relegated to Serie AB on May 13 after finishing third from bottom of Italy's top flight.

Obodo's brother, Kenneth Obodo, who is also a footballer in Italy and is currently in Nigeria, was quoted by Italian news agency ANSA as saying: "Christian is fine. We are in touch with the kidnappers, who want some money.

"We can't give them more than 100,000 euros ($125,000). Unfortunately these things happen in our country."

His brother-in-law, Obidike Okechukwu, was quoted by ANSA as saying that the kidnappers had asked for a ransom of 150,000 euros.

On behalf of the Miss West Africa team, we hope these cockroaches don't taint the name of the ever growing, business and tourist orientated country of Nigeria that has developed in all aspects of economic growth. Justice will be served may they receive their money or not. We wish the best for Christian Obodo.
