Miss West Africa Ghana 2011 report

The final of the Miss West Africa Ghana (MWAGH) pageant took place on the 22nd of July at the Kama Conference Centre in Labone, Accra. The night saw one of the five remaining finalists from a shortlist of twelve prove why they were worthy to carry the title Ohemaa – Miss West Africa Ghana 2011.

The night was graced by dignatories, invited guests and family, and for the first time in pageant history, Queens from other Ghanaian beauty pageants; a symbol of MWAGH's commitment to unity between West African women. Event Strategist Bernard P Achampong (ideasgenius.com) commented: 'The vision for MWAGH is to empower young women not to compete but to work together and reclaim their Yaa Asantewaa spirit'.

The show was hosted by Miriam Osei (XFM) and judged by Em Bartels (founder for Ghanaian Professional Achievers UK Awards ), Myckl Kuta-Dankwah (Owner of Regallity Shoes) and Dr Frances Maame Dufie (Lecturer at KNUST). The night also featured performances from Bukom Dancehall, Kojo Osew, Gunami and the winners of Vodafone Icons Divas Edition RnM. Rave Media's Ruddy Kwakye affirmed that the event was a fitting showcase for 'the cream of Ghana's new and emerging talent'.

The climax of the event were the finalists' passionate and intellectual speeches in support of the NGOs they will represent as part of their assignments. Aisha Mohammed highlighted about “How to promote the lives and communities of the Ghana Nationwide Kente Weavers Association”; Emelia Amandi spoke about “How Empowering the Woman in Development will make a difference to the women in the Northern region and nation as a whole”; Jennifer Annan (who is also now a finalist in Miss Tourism Ghana 2011) delivered on “Action not just for Development but one that is Sustainable”; Mary Adomako communicated on the “Change we can make to the lives of children born with congenital heart disease” and Nancy Baah expressed how the “Increase of orphans in the capital is affecting the number of children being used in child labour”.

In the end it was Mary Adomako who was crowned the first Miss West Africa Ghana 2011 Queen (MWAGH11 Ohemaa) and awarded a full year’s school fees ; Kente Cloth, slippers and bag set by Ghana Nationwide Kente Weavers Association and entry, flight and accommodation for Miss West Africa International in Gambia in December. Mary will be The First ambassador to The Ghana Coalition of NGOs in Health along with supporting her assigned NGO, The Arula Memorial Heart Foundation based in Central Region.

The Director of Wekumei Enterprises Ltd, promoters of MWAGH summed it up perfectly “Our first event was intended to be a statement about presenting pageants in a completely new way. The women are sisters, not products and our investment in them is for their future as assets to our nation. Above all, we thank God for honouring our commitment to those intentions”.
